A Storm in Montana is Will DuRey’s fifth Black Horse Western but only the second I’ve read, the previous one being In the High Bitterroots, and like that book I found this to be an equally entertaining read...

This is the second book about Broke and D.M. Harrison includes enough background in this to fill in the backstory of not just Broke but the other characters that return too, and of the relationships that they have with other, such as the now deadly animosities directed at Broke by his Comanche brothers, Black Horse and Wolf Slayer...
Tom Deegan's fight for survival begins when he rescues a child from a burning stagecoach, held up by the murdering Preacher and his gang. The Preacher dies and Tom takes the loot and hides it. Years later three killers are looking for Tom, and the money. But protecting himself, and his adopted son Billy, is only made more difficult by the local rancher, whose hired guns want Tom dead. By using his fighting skills can he protect them both? And can he remain silent about the whereabouts of the cash?

Intellligent, adult western dealing with serious themes - hugely enjoyable and a great advert for the genre.
Michael D. George is a prolific writer of westerns under his own name and a handful of pseudonyms. Most of his work under his own name are parts of series, and this is the fifth Valko book. The Sunset Kid has also appeared in a book of his own, so this one really will have follows of the authors work wondering who will come out victorious and whether either, or both, will die...
Young lawyer O'Hara gets an auspicious welcome to the town of Concho - a bullet through his hat, and before he has a chance to put up a shingle, he becomes involved in a bloody war between two cattle titans, Wesley Steelman and David Ingram. It is war without quarter, and among the two gun mercenaries employed by both sides, the most notorious is eighteen-year-old Bob Quantrell. Cheerful and fearless, but a cold-blooded killer, Quantrell is loyal only to his own lightning-fast six-gun. O'Hara learns quickly that Colt and Winchester are the only law in Concho.
Sheriff Tom Logan has to follow the order of the judge and hang Old Man Barton for murder. Barton, an old frontiersman in Winchester Junction, had shot a man he claimed was a horse thief, but the alleged thief was the son of a rich and powerful rancher and the bullet that killed him was in the back. The sheriff, the jurors and townsmen are troubled by the execution, especially when a man, highly capable with his fists and gun, appears in town determined to prove that Old Barton was innocent of the crime for which he was hanged and intends to settle the score.I.J. As far as I can tell this is the second book to carry the author name of Vance Tillman, the first being Riders on the Wind. Tillman easily hooks the reader with many questions and includes a great twist about halfway through that took me completely by surprise and this results in Fogarty becoming involved in a second manhunt that is also linked to the Ocotillo kid.
She wore a Badge by Steve Hayes

978-0719806216

Deputy Marshal Mercer was a tough, no-nonsense badge-packer, and the tall, lean lawdog from El Paso was on the trail of three crazy convicts who'd just broken out of Huntsville Prison. When their trails finally crossed there was going to be bloodshed and gunsmoke and, for the killers, a surprise that might very well prove fatal, because Liberty Mercer was a woman. But only a fool would underestimate Liberty. She was as handy with the Colt .45 at her hip as she was with the Winchester Model '86 she carried on her saddle. With a band of reinforcements in the shape of gunfighters Gabriel Moonlight, Latigo Rawlins, mysterious blind man Don Rojo and her father, the man they called Drifter, Liberty Mercer was primed and ready for the final showdown...
Whiplash by Owen G. Irons

978-0719808203

Sandy Rivers was taking a well-deserved rest in the trail head town of Durant, Colorado when the dying man staggered to his saloon table. The injured man had been whiplashed half to death and then finished off with a knife in his back. He had come to warn Sandy of something but died before he could finish what he had to say. If Sandy had let that be an end to things, he would not have been pursued across the desert, shot at, charmed and lied to by a beautiful woman, then witnessed the death of his home ranch's owner, before finally meeting the killer with the whip.
A short novel and ten stories, all of which capture Olsen at his best, Lone Hand takes the familiar theme of the gunfighter fleeing from his past and reinvents it with startling psychological depth. Jason's Journal is a ghost story of passion and betrayal set on the Arizona frontier. And rarely has Olsen reached the level of tension that he achieves in the masterful Five Minutes. But each tale in this collection is a fine example of Western storytelling at its peak, tales so authentic you can practically smell the smoke of the campfires.
For the cowboys, their status as heroes is short-lived and when Jarrett learns they are escorting Kate Jeavons, a dance-hall girl whose sister he has captive, to testify against him, they are firmly in his sights. Black clouds are forming overhead, but which storm will break first: the wild prairie rain, or the deadly guns of Jarrett and his crew?
It seemed the only way to get out of Red Rock Penitentiary was to die and be shipped out as a corpse. So Dave Jarrett had taken his chance to feign his death and leave Red Rock in a coffin. But enemies, old and new, were all waiting for him to lead them to $70,000. That was when the brutal chain-gang he had left behind began to look far better than dodging bullets at every step...
I’ve not read any of Steve Hayes books before, other than a shared authorship title written with David Whitehead, and this story makes me wish I had. Latigo seems to be a continuation of his previous book, El Diablo (not that you need to have read that before this to enjoy it), and further checking seems to point to all his westerns being linked by various characters or places...
