Black Horse Westerns - August 2012

Guns for Gonzalez by Corba Sunman

Provost Captain Slade Moran tracks three army deserters who stole two wagons of guns and supplies to sell to the Mexican bandit, Gonzalez. Time is against him and the renegades need capturing before they cross the border. But Moran's situation is about to get even more complicated. The daughter of Gonzalez, fleeing her father's anger, is being pursued by her father's men and breakaway rebel, Pedro Sanchez, who wants to use her as a bartering chip against her father. When the bullets start flying Captain Moran is right in the middle, and stuck there until the bitter end.

Iron Eyes the Fearless by Rory Black

Following their robbery of the San Angelo bank, Iron Eyes has just outgunned the Lucas gang when he discovers that the sheriff has been wounded and may not pay out the reward money. Downing most of a bottle of whiskey, Iron Eyes spots another outlaw in the saloon. With time to kill he allows Joe Kane to run and then, like a cat after a juicy mouse, sets out after him into forested Indian territory. He comes under attack from a band of Cheyenne warriors, but although wounded, the bounty-hunter keeps on fighting until his guns are empty. The braves close in...Tethered to a stake as triumphant chants echo all around him, he awaits his fate silently. He is unafraid. He is Iron Eyes the Fearless.

Return to Tatanka Crossing by Will DuRey

The war has been over for three years but only now is Charlie Jefferson returning home. If he has changed during his absence, so too have the inhabitants of the Wyoming valley he left behind. Neighbourliness has been replaced by greed and hostility; the cluster of buildings around Sam Flint's trading post has developed into a small township where gun-carrying saddle-tramps congregate; and a man called Brent Deacon is forging an empire at the expense of the original settlers. Choosing to interfere on behalf of Lars Svensson, who is accused of murder, brings Charlie into conflict with the dangerous Deacon, but the reasons for their animosity are much more personal.

Six-Gun Nemesis by Colin Bainbridge

In Chaparral Bend a gallows is being raised for youngster Ty Garland, accused of bank robbery. But is he really guilty? His old ma claims he is innocent, and town tamer, Crossdraw Kitchenbrand, is inclined to believe her, especially as the notorious gunman Angel Addison and his gang, the Yuma boys, seem to be involved. Crossdraw's search for answers brings him up against big ranch-owner Landon Clovis and leads him to the outlaw roost of Addisonville. He can count on the support of the old woman and a girl he has rescued, but will that be enough to succeed against overwhelming odds? Will his six-guns finally bring justice?

Blood on the Land by Paul Bedford

In 1844, young British Army Officer, Thomas Collins, is sent to the fledgling Republic of Texas. His mission: to meet the legendary President Sam Houston to negotiate terms for the British Empire's involvement in his country. What Thomas finds is a world of subterfuge and danger. The republic is scourged by an implacable and deadly enemy, the Comanche Nation, for whom rape, pillage and bloody warfare is a way of life. His desperate fight for survival brings him into contact with Captain John Coffee Hays, and his effective Texas Rangers, and ends in a lethal climax aboard a steamboat on the unpredictable Brazos River.

Beyond Redemption by I. J. Parnham

As a child Jeff Dale witnessed the terrible aftermath of an atrocity. Elmer Drake killed three members of a family and when the surviving girl Cynthia went missing, Jeff vowed that one day he'd find her, no matter how long it took. Ten years later, after finding a clue about Cynthia's fate, Jeff becomes a bounty hunter and follows the trail to the frontier town of Redemption. And in Redemption stalks a gunslinger who carries a gun in one hand and a cross in the other. A man with a rope-burn around his neck, called Elmer Drake...

Rising Red by Caleb Rand

US Marshal, Will Ritter, is well used to hauling outlaws in front of a judge but this is different, Theodore Pond was a one-time friend. Ritter is to transport him across many miles of wild country to stand trial for murder, despite the doubt of Pond's guilt. When the prisoner and his cohorts try to break free, Will's problems really begin. From an abandoned mining town, and with the distraction of two young women passengers, Ritter sets out on a nerve-jangling drive. Finding himself both at the mercy of his prisoners and the moving target of a ruthless posse, this is one journey he will be lucky to finish alive.

Shadows of Guilt by Mark Bannerman

It starts out as a simple mission to trace his kid brother, but Brad Caulderfield rides into a heap of trouble when he kills the brother of Marshal Seth Blevins. Charged with murder and pursued by the embittered lawman, Brad has no alternative but to run for his life. He faces further complications from Stella Goodnight who is out for his blood when he fails to return her affections. When his brother reappears bearing bitter resentments from the past, he is looking headlong into the face of his nemesis...

Review of Blood on the Land by Paul Bedford

This first Black Horse Western from Paul Bedford is unusual in both the time period the story is set in and the fact that the story is told in the first person. The book is also much longer than the majority of BHW due to more words per line and more lines per page. Chapters also begin a few lines after the previous one ends rather than starting on a new page.

Paul Bedford's prose is very readable and his story is action-packed, containing many fights with the Comanche...

Review of The Outlaw's Daughter by C. J. Sommers

Matt Holiday is an able hero who, at times, puts helping others ahead of his mission to recover the stolen gold. He’s not opposed to getting into a gunfight if needed (and of course it is) but it’s Serenity who comes across as the more devil may care type of person, often acting without thinking, and is ready to gun down those she sees as needing to be killed without a blink of an eye...

Review of Hour of the Black Wolf by Mark P. Lynch

Mark P. Lynch expertly uses the technique of switching between his cast of excellent characters chapter-by-chapter or scene-by-scene. This enables him to finish each of these sections by leaving someone in a dangerous situation or with a question, thus ensuring the reader will find it very difficult to put the book down before finding out what happens next.

Review of Riker's Gold by Skeeter Dodds

I picked up this novel wondering what kind of western writer someone named Skeeter might be. Checking the copyright page, he's apparently actually James O'Brien. I gargled the Internet and came up with nothing about this particular writer.

Riker's Gold was originally published as a Black Horse Wester in 2001. I read the large print edition published in the Dales Western Library.

I thought I would be in for a long, slow read when the novel opened with Jack Riker bemoaning the bad times: his once-fruitful farm has hit bad times, as the past few years have brought drought and a failing future to Riker and his wife, who has turned rather bitterly against him as well.

Then a soldier comes by and leaves behind saddle bags full of Army gold for Riker's safekeeping. The soldier is sick with a fever that has wiped out the rest of his company. He wants Riker to hold onto the gold until the Army sends someone looking for the lost troop. Then the soldier rides into the snow-covered mountains to die...

Review of Invite to a Showdown by Terrell L. Bowers

Terrell L. Bowers begins this book by telling two separate stories, both running parallel to each other before converging on a collision course. First we meet Rowena and witness her struggle to survive as an Indian captive, before being freed to live with an aging buffalo hunter. During this part of the book Bowers switches between Rowena’s life trials and those of Travis, each of their stories providing fascinating reading and bringing them into conflict with two different groups of men...

Mark P. Lynch's new blog

So, this is the blog. Well, a blog. My blog.

We’ve yet to see how often it will be updated and how much of what does actually get written here is worth reading. But as somewhere to begin, this is the beginning. It’s my intention to post some tales here, talk about stories, writing, publishing (and not publishing and self-publishing), science fiction and fantasy (what we loosely call speculative fiction if we don’t want to appear like hacks), crime fiction, mainstream fiction, Westerns, and of course the big bad bear in the woods.

The big bad bear in the woods is the scary thing. And quite rightly so. It’s the thing that gets you in the night, rears its head and snaps at you when you think you’re okay and happily wandering through the trees and enjoying the weather, maybe even thinking about what the Pope’s doing.

When the Links page is up and running properly, I’ll sort out some links to sites about ME and fibromyalgia.

I did consider not doing the ME/fibro thing. But it’d be hard not to talk about it in this blog. If I’m to be honest, then it’s a part of me. It’s shaped my life massively. Relationships, travel, work, writing... hard to imagine any of it being the same if I’d been a healthy person. It’s shaped this blog post, after all.

But there’s all the rest as well. You know, science, politics, life, art.

It’d be my pleasure if you to stick around and share that with me.

I’m Mark. Pleased to meet you.

Review of Railroaded! by Mark Bannerman

Mark notes in his interview that he's a fan of Ernest Haycox. His well-crafted sentences, the details he uses to build his characters, and the descriptions of events all provide proof that he's studied Haycox's finer works. There is a pulse and rhythm to Bannerman's narrative that demonstrates his attention to his storytelling craft.

His structuring of the novel provides a nice example. Most BHWs I've read offer a linear narrative, building from a traditional exposition of place and setting, introducing characters, and then adding the points of conflict from A to B to C. ..

An Interview with Terrell L. Bowers

So, Terrell, what prompted you to become a writer?

My dad got me started reading Westerns. After about a hundred of them, I decided there wasn't enough romance or humor. Being a wit (perhaps only half of one) I tried to infuse more of a relationship between guy and girl. And, when I could add some humor, I did...

Review of Tanglefoot by Logan Winters

Logan Winters once more comes up with the goods in this fast paced book that has greed as its central theme. Greed made legal by hastily re-written laws that it seems cannot be opposed or changed. So even though Chad and his new friend deputy Byron Starr, who has a dubious past of his own that could be his undoing, it seems that this is one new law that they can’t beat...
